How to block emails on Gmail?

Spoiler alter: When you block a sender, their messages will go to your Spam folder.

Gmail is one of the most widely used email services in the world, with over 1.8 billion active users. However, with the increasing amount of spam and unwanted emails, it can be frustrating to constantly receive unwanted messages in your inbox. Fortunately, Gmail provides an option to block unwanted email senders. In this article, we will go through several steps to block email on Gmail, and address some common misconceptions about blocking emails.

  • Blocking Email on Gmail

Blocking an email on Gmail is slightly different from what you may expect. When you block an email address, it does not mean that the emails will be deleted immediately. Instead, the blocked emails will be sent to the spam folder, where you can choose to delete or ignore them. This can be confusing for some users who expect the blocked email to be removed completely.

To block an email address on Gmail, follow these steps:

Step 1: Open the email you want to block

Step 2: Click on the three vertical dots in the upper right-hand corner of the email

Step 3: Select "Block [sender's name]"

Step 4: Click "Block" in the pop-up window that appears

Once you have blocked an email address, all future emails from that sender will be sent to the spam folder. Keep in mind that this will not delete any existing emails from that sender in your inbox or any emails that have already been sent.

  • Filtering Emails on Gmail

If you are still receiving unwanted emails even after blocking the sender, you can try creating a filter to automatically delete or archive the emails. Here's how:

Step 1: Click the gear icon in the upper right-hand corner of the Gmail page

Step 2: Select "See all settings"

Step 3: Click on the "Filters and Blocked Addresses" tab

Step 4: Click on "Create a new filter"

Step 5: Enter the email address or keyword you want to filter

Step 6: Select "Delete it" or "Skip the Inbox (Archive it)" depending on what you want to do with the email

    Step 7: Click "Create filter"

This will automatically filter all future emails from the sender or containing the keyword you entered. However, keep in mind that this may not work for all emails, and some may still end up in your spam or trash folders.

  • Misconceptions about Blocking Email on Gmail

As mentioned earlier, many users have misconceptions about blocking emails on Gmail. One common misconception is that blocking an email will remove it completely from your inbox. However, this is not the case. Instead, the email will be sent to the spam folder, where you can choose to delete or ignore it.

Another misconception is that there are third-party extensions or solutions that can effectively block emails on Gmail. While there are many extensions and solutions available, they may not work as effectively as blocking the email directly on Gmail.
